Peer Outdoor Education for Mental Health (P.O.E.M)

  • Google Calendar ICS

Peer Outdoor Education for Mental Health (POEM) is a peer support specialist training program that will take place at Jubilee Healing Farm during the 2024-2025 academic year for community college, undergraduate or graduate students who identify as Black, have lived experience of mental illness or substance abuse, and have a passion for supporting others in their healing journey. Individuals taking a gap year are also welcome. The program offers state certification as a peer support specialist combined with Jubilee training in transformative justice, herbalism, mindfulness, yoga, music therapy and ancestral healing.

POEM aims to train and support a generation of Black community healers to address the disparity in mental health that is causing Black students to leave their education at a higher rate than other groups. POEM seeks to create communities healing, to change lives, and to change the world.

Monthly Ancestral Healing & The Ecological Self Study Circles

On the heels of the Spring Equinox, Nora and I invite you to join us for our ancestral and ecological self-study circle. This month, we will explore dreaming as liberatory praxis. We will gather at Jubilee Healing Farm, press our bodies against the Earth, and dream and vision alongside her. We will close our time together with a seed-casting ritual, offering up our visions and dreams of liberated realities and futures directly to the body of the Earth.

We hope you will join us.

For those interested in a communal healing experience in nature, we warmly invite you to join our Ancestral Healing and Ecological Self study circle. We will weave an immersive community healing space through ceremony and ritual grounded in our shared ecological and ancestral experience. We will gather monthly for an hour and a half on a small farm in Hillsborough, NC, for these events. Our space will center on the experiences of those who identify as gender-expansive, non-binary, and/or women. The space and experience are designed for those who seek a communal, non-clinical, and ecological model of healing. Donate what you can – all proceeds will support a healing retreat planned for 2024.

Ancestral Healing and The Ecological Self

  • Google Calendar ICS

We are in the process of rescheduling our event for 2024! Stay tuned! Watch our update below.

Digital Art By Tamira Cousett

Nora Dennis and I are joining to offer a three-day retreat for femme-identified, BIPOC individuals seeking a new lens on healing. As humans we are each carrying an ancestral and ecological story that plays out in our day-to-day choices and actions. Without awareness of these stories, our actions and choices can repeat and ingrain maladaptive habits, rituals and behaviors. Together, we will shine light onto the history that each of us carries. Through movement, breathwork, creative expression and more classical didactics, Tamira and Nora will weave an immersive experience of grounded liberation for participants.

Activities will include:

  • Daily movement practice

  • Guided ancestral connection practices

  • Ecological self-study

  • Creative integration through visual arts

  • Nutritious meals (daily lunch served)

  • Hearty snacks and teas (daily)

  • Deep rest

The Setting:

The workshop will take place at the beautiful Eco-Institute at Pickards Mountain, an Earth Sanctuary and Learning Community dedicated to Healing the Human-Earth Relationship, founded in 2005. The non-profit educational farm and learning center reside on 28 acres in the Piedmont Valley of North Carolina, eight miles west of Chapel Hill, on what is—to the best of our knowledge—ancestral lands of the Occaneechi-Saponi, Eno, Tutelo, Tuscarora, Sissipihaw, Shakori, Saura, and Catawba.

Longing as Light: A Winter Solstice Ritual

Tis the season to be still and to feel…

As we deepen into the dark stillness of Earth in this sacred season, we may experience both gratitude and hope as well as brokenheartedness, which illuminates our deepest longings and lights the path before us.
In sacred space held by song, we will create a space of stillness where longing can be felt and welcomed as our luminous guide.  Through ritually sharing the light of our longings, we will collectively honor and feed the deep heart of love that beckons us home to a more liberated world and our true place of belonging.

An Autumn Equinox Ritual: Communion with The Ancestral Waters

Beautiful dark skinned black woman with long braids. Profile image of her facing an orange moon against a deep blue textured backdrop with white swirls that look like streams of water. Crystals surround her shoulders.

Digital Art by Tamira Cousett

Join ritualists, Carolyn and Tamira as we co-weave a portal of connection and remembrance with the Ancestral Waters that sustain life and hold the mysteries of ancestral wisdom.

We invite you to join us for a communal ritual to celebrate the fall equinox. Our ritual will center communion and connection with the ancient element of water as a portal to reviving the blessing of our ancestors for ourselves and our times!

Like our ancestors' wisdom, water cannot be created or destroyed. Thus, every water molecule on Earth has existed for billions of years, serving as the life-blood of all who have come before us and connecting us all to the ecosystems of creation. It is a multi-dimensional being and shapeshifter, a co-creator and sustainer of life, and a keeper of ancestral memories and mysteries.

During our ritual gathering, we will collectively attune to this field of living memory to bring forward a harvest of blessings via song/orin, story, and a water blessing ritual.

Ritually, you will be invited to commune with the ase of the ancestral waters that live in you and bless/charge water with the memories and medicines these ancestral waters are inspiring in you at this time.

We pray that our ritual will nourish our souls and the soul of the world!

With and devotion,

Tamira and Carolyn

The element. Daily, ordinary, enduring. Extraordinary, shiftful, expansive. A word for that one is thirsty for. Desire. What can quench. What can be swum and what cannot be swum. The Atlantic. Middle Passages. The distance between this and that. That which cannot be held for long in bare hands but can be carried. The sky, the river, the rain. Knowing and unknowing. Ancestral. Elder, our singular and plural and going on.

Digital Art by Tamira Cousett

Come join us around the communal fire for a ritual of claiming lives that bring us fully alive!

Join ritualists, Carolyn and Tamira as we co-weave a portal of nourishment held by the Spirit of Fire.
